My initial setup was an old i3-6100, 500 GB nvme drive cache, and 4x8TB drives from my old NAS. The only extra costs were for the nvme drive, I had an old case as well, and a basic Unraid license, which was $50 I think. Lots of setup guides available, SpaceinvaderOne’s YouTube channel is a good start.

As long as you don’t need any heavy transcoding of media files for Emby/Plex/Jellyfin this spec is fine as a starter.

My current server is an i5-11400, Gigabyte Z590 board and I added 2 14TB drives which meant I had to upgrade my Unraid licence. I also needed a PCI board to cope with the extra sata ports and I got a nice Fractal Node 304 case so it is sitting below my TV. The drives were schucked external drives so not super expensive, total cost about $800 I think. Unraid uses parity disk(s) rather than Raid, one of the 14TB discs is setup as my parity which means my array is 46TB. The onboard UHD Graphics on the i5 can handle transcoding ok.

I run Sonaar/Radaar/Readaar/Lidaar for media, with Prowlaar managing usenet and torrent connections via sabnzbd and deluge, via a VPN.

Rather than a NAS, consider building an Unraid server, I built my first one from old hardware that I repurposed, my current one is a little more sophisticated but not over the top.

Unraid can be setup as an automated media server with all the ARRs running to manage your library.

While I abhor the whole concept of tipping, the thing that really grinds my gears is that we are expected to pay a percentage of the bill for service. If I order a basic cheese pizza or a 16 ounce tomahawk steak with a big chunk of foie gras and all the trimmings the server does not have to do much extra work for the latter. But if I have to tip $5 on a $20 pizza, why the fuck do I have to tip $100 for almost the same amount of service for the steak? Sure it weighs more and you might need to make an extra trip to serve the trimmings, but WTF, the server is not providing any more value by serving an expensive dish.

If I order an expensive bottle of wine it takes no extra effort to serve, why should I pay a shit ton more service charge?

As a boomer, I don’t recall my parents teaching me anything about prejudice, the same at school. The only guidance on prejudice came from my religious education (I’m RC by birth) and to be honest it was completely the opposite to this sentiment. We were taught, for example, that Protestants were evil and that we should never befriend them or trust them.

I stopped going to church when I was about 11, it no longer felt relevant and the teachings were against my own personal beliefs. I had grown up with friends who were of different faiths, Jewish, Protestant, Muslim as well as Catholic, and didn’t consider them to be anything other than buddies.

Some religious teachings have value, but by promoting prejudice as well, the impact is diminished. The only times I have been in church since I was 11 were for weddings and funerals.
