Because of the way our brains are constructed we do all generalize. But part of the job of being a citizen of the world with other humans around you is to control that instinct.

I work with some people who are legitimately trying to cure cancer out of sheer love for all of their fellow humans who just happen to have been born in the United States.

I consider it my obligation to see their goodness regardless of where they live.

As another Canadian, I’d like to say that this dude does not speak for us all. We understand the cancer you’re dealing with. Our tumors are smaller and less likely to metastasize but they are still there festering trying to eat their way to the surface.

Three years in and our ‘self-sufficiency’ is limited to about 3 weeks of food per year if we relied on our own garden/forest 100% of the time for those 3 weeks. We don’t do that, but instead supplement with the garden and forest and learn more each year about what does well in our little spot.

I don’t say this to dissuade - but to make sure you set proper expectations. Self-sufficiency, even just for food, is a decade-long endeavor where you almost certainly will have to work some kind of job or have some income in the meantime.

And to address the argument on precision versus descending. I disagree. An instrument counting seconds is more precise than a machine counting minutes, hours, days, weeks, months etc… And that holds true through the chain. The precision is in the unit.

We can debate this all day. And I can’t honestly say that I would take either side in a purely semantics argument.

But the wording comes directly from RFC3339 which is, to me, the definitive source for useful date representation.

You misunderstand my comment.

I’m saying the digits in a date should be printed in an order dictated by which units give the most precision.

A year is the least precise, a month is the next least, followed by day, hour, minute, second, millisecond.

I don’t know why anyone would ever argue against this. Least precise to most precise. Like every other number we use.

(I don’t know if this is true for EVERY numerical measure, but I’m sure someone will let me know of one that doesn’t)
