I went back to my hometown recently for a funeral. I’m in my 40s, not hideous, and I wore a nicely tailored mid level suit. Just under a quarter of the town is over the age of 65. The town is also poor as shit, with the median income under 30k/yr and median house prices around 85k. So my funeral suit may as well have been a tuxedo made of finally spun gold to some of these people.
The number of old women who told me I was such a nice looking young man is astounding. A lot of them were trying to find out if I was single because they wanted to set me up with their daughter/niece/friend’s daughter.
It was absolutely surreal how I got more compliments and attempts to set me up with someone in a town of a couple of thousand people over the course of a day than I have over the last decade combined. And the only reason it’s a decade instead of my whole life before that is because my group of friends have started actively complimenting each other and that has spread through a few circles at places I frequent.
