I had someone on a dating app call me a psycho and unmatch for not being on socials in 2019 or so. Yeah, if that’s an important trait to you, we probably aren’t a good fit.

Also, shout out to ICQ. And then I knew I was old. Oh shit, Adium. I remember when I loved computers, back before everything sucked.

A collection of pixels on a screen must first prove to me that they are human, then that we work out as a couple, then that there is a reason to be connected on social media as well. Longest relationship I ever had, we never connected each other’s social media accounts. What would be the point?

i used to, until i found out about linux (i used dos because that way i didnt have to use windows lmao, so when i found a distro that doesnt format ur hdd when install i was like, “screw dos, i have a new daily driver”)

getting used to bash instead of batch was kinda hard tho, oh well…now that ive learned to use it im back in my usual “do stuff in terminal” thing instead of using the gui

I recently started looking into more decentralized instant messengers after being on signal for a year or so. I’m happy with signal but just wanted to look into what else is out there. I really don’t get why XMPP gets left in the dust. I see so much praise for matrix, but every public group ive joined is full of spam bots and racists. Simplex is centralized. Even as far as the fediverse goes, I would’ve assumed everyone here would hype up XMPP since it works similarly with the username@instance.com convention.

There was a time when you could chat with people on facebook and google with XMPP. I think when they dropped it the communities using it got disrupted and probably never recovered.

I remember when people got mad at me for getting rid of Myspace.
    And MSN/Live/Windows Messenger
    And Facebook
    And Digg
    And Reddit
    And Whatsapp

    They’ll get over it

Ah, youth. I remember being told I was weird for not being on Facebook and now everyone my age hates Facebook with a passion.

Don’t worry, time will vindicate your choices. All these apps go the way of the Dodo eventually.

The cycle of enshittification always ends up making them basically unusable at some point, and only real simple people are still using it by that point.

I feel the same way about private torrent trackers. I’m exposed to so many people and so much media from all over the world I would otherwise never see or talk to. The media is a big deal, too, because it helps me understand and conceptualize how other cultures view things. When that media is never released to Western audiences, that means Western audiences aren’t exploring those cultural ideas.

I get exposed to them because I pirate them.
