The vanishing music might be a corrupted library file or a library syncing issue. It’s not an uncommon bug. You should search your computer for MP3 and AAC files to see if they’re still available. And this isn’t just an Apple Music issue. This is something that has been an issue with iTunes forever.
As for the UI, what is a “total disaster?” I feel like it is basically the iTunes classic UI these days, sans video and phone syncing.

oh I searched and searched, they are gone gone. happened on the update from iTunes to Music. I’ll never forgive Apple for this.

Were you able to restore from a backup?

I tried with Time Machine but no luck. I had to restore my machine a month or so earlier and never saw my iTunes archive after that.
