Very different for a fundamental reason: at least in the US, one exists to serve the people, the other to extract the maximum amount of profit possible from the people. But to your point, they have similarities in that they are both entirely constructed of flawed humans. That difference in purpose though, makes a huge impact on we interact with them, what we expect of them, and our ability to influence them.

Yep, I’ve even personally witnessed the arguments in business to business sales. When the marketing gets invited, sanity is no longer a welcome.

Nope. Many are plugged in and it will keep the seat and water warm. It further warms the seat when it detects someone is sitting on it. Kinda depends on budget, features, manufacturers.

NGL, middle of the night visits are still a bit jarring because the heating logic tries to conserve energy at night so it tends to me room temperature. But whatevs.

Two examples because life is funny like that:

I moved into an apartment years ago where it was partially below ground. Didn’t think anything of it. And then the first morning I slept there I was startled awake by a car’s horn and then engine as it was being remote started directly in my face. Or at least, that’s what it felt like. The window was at headlight height, and the car was parked right up to the window. It was hell. Nothing could have prepared me for that. So incredibly loud and bright. Thankfully it was a temporary apartment, but lemme tell you I was highly motivated to get out of there within a few months.

In the second case years later it was a beep. Just a constant high-frequency beep that would not end. Non-stop every hour for months. Apparently my neighbor’s RV was parked at a business’s back lot behind my house. Well, the battery was dying so the obvious move is to beep non-stop until the battery is fully dead. Months. A few weeks into this insanity I reported it to the police and they drove out and argued with me about how they couldn’t hear it and that finally it wasn’t loud enough to constitute a nuisance. I can hear it during the day, and I can sure as shit hear it in my bedroom 150ft away. Doesn’t have to be loud to me incredibly annoying. White noise would barely mask it. I wanted to burn that RV to the ground.

Virtualization in general? Sure, I can. I’ve tried it a bit with bhyve. But it’s definitely a lot heavier since I’m now running a full Linux os and dedicating resources to it to run docker just to run a python or node app.

Learning the project is in Go though is a sigh of relief. Professionally I’ve moved to Go (from Python) just because it’s so damn easy to build and distribute.

I just wish there was better support for the other *nix’s. While the language support them just fine, docker on the other hand strangles it. =(

For me it’s more like new interesting self hosted project and then find out it’s only distributed as a docker container without any proper packaging. As someone who runs FreeBSD, this is a frustration I’ve run into with quite a number of projects.

From my understanding, transcode quality is a concern. I’ve unfortunately read AMD’s implementation just isn’t very good. That one is better off going Intel particularly from the last few years.

Jellyfin’s docs specifically talk about the issue.

Intel’s transcoding is also faster in the same generation.
