    I’m a CentristTM!

    • Conservative and progressive viewpoints should be given the same weight and consideration
    • Both sides have merits and flaws
    • Just Hear Them Out
    • Only stating facts, not opinions
    • Meet me in the middle
    • Quotes pseudo-intellectual shit like “only a sith deals in absolutes”
    • I’m not a transphobe, I just think–
    • Stop arguing and let The System work it out!

(this is a joke, I’m not a centrist)

Criticall acclaim doesn’t make a thing automatically good. The criteria are way too arbitrary, and sometimes boils down to “a well-known publisher has done a thing” simply because it attracts more eyes and journalists have a financial interest in playing nice with those publishers.

A Hat in Time was released around the same time as Odyssey. It’s the first game of a small indie studio and it beats the living piss out of Mario in terms of gameplay and style. The only reason it wasn’t more of a breakthrough was timing and getting eclipsed by Mario’s shadow.

    Great games

Oh, bollocks to that. All it took was one serious competitor to Pokémon to make Nintendo shit the bed. Excepting Zelda, most of the pathologically Nintendo games are shovelware-tier trash. If the current iteration of Mario or Mario Kart were released today without the nostalgiabait and brand recognition, they’d be the laughing stock of the industry.

All Nintendo has is quirky gadgets, a closed ecosystem, and notoriety.

(I’m not a doctor and barely skimmed through the relevant wikipedia articles, but here goes)

The “soy panic” is the result of a similar cognitive deficiency to why flat earthers, anti-vaxxers, sovereign citizens, climate deniers, and anti-nuclear activists exist: they hear something that sounds like it makes sense in their head, promptly shit their pants, and base their entire worldview on that misconception, which also lets them rage against the status quo and gives them a false sense of intellectual superiority (the “everybody else but me is wrong, wake up sheeple” mentality). That misconception then gets spread around in a massive game of Chinese telephone (I hate social media) and everybody else that tries to explain the science behind it gets labelled as a cuck, beta, soyboy, chud, every new-age insult they can think of.

In this case, the base misunderstanding comes from the fact that soy contains something called phytoestrogen. Sounds scary, right? People don’t know what phytoestrogen is. I didn’t. But they saw that it had “estrogen” in it and immediately latched onto the idea that consuming it would somehow suppress testosterone*, ruin their sperm, and feminize them, and the solution is to eat only a Manly Macho Man’s Diet with lots of meat and dairy (which contains actual mammalian estrogen).

The problems with this hypothesis (I refuse to call it a “theory”) are innumerable, not smallest of which is that it’s complete hogwash with zero clinical evidence linking sperm count and testosterone levels to consuming soy products. Phytoestrogen is also a plant-based estrogen, which, unlike animal estrogen, can’t even do whatever they claim it can do to the human body.

    * On the topic of suppressing testosterone: it doesn’t work like that. It works the opposite way in fact. Biological males have estrogen, but the testosterone suppresses its effects. That’s why trans women have to take testosterone blockers.

  • People who report this under the “Breaks Community Rules” umbrella term – I’d love to know which rules the post is breaking.

I have an overwhelmingly negative opinion on AI-generated trash, but there are no rules against posting it, I have no plans to implement such rules, and I certainly wouldn’t apply them retroactively. As long as the slop does not violate instance-wide or community rules, I will let downvotes speak.
