Where is this non-capitalist utopia you think we should emulate. It can be from anytime in history, when and where is it?
If that’s a real question and not a gotcha, I strongly recommend the book The Dawn of Everything. The world is and can be more complicated than the choice between various flavors of authoritarianism.
Personally, I don’t believe in utopia, but I do believe we all deserve an opportunity to exist free of the coercive power of others. The fact that any real community striving for this will be in some way imperfect does not diminish the worthiness of efforts toward that end. We don’t need to emulate some extant utopia, but we might, as individuals and groups, seize the freedom to choose what is best for ourselves in as many ways as we see fit.
Great for camping or if you’re just feeling lazy. Just rip it and sip it. 😂
Due to my habit of eating soup straight from the can, my partners refer to it as “bachelorette chow.” I remain unrepentant.
Voters in the U.S. would, unfortunately, continue to believe that locking people up in torturous conditions for decades is both an effective and just means of dealing with antisocial behavior, all evidence to the contrary notwithstanding.
Humans, in their current form, have survived for ~200k years sans the ability to surveil the location of their children at all times, an activity that has dubious safety benefits.
Honestly, I think this will be a bigger boon to folks like Elevated Access than to the billionaires of the world. Makes it a little harder for some chud who doesn’t like what they’re doing to show up at a pilot’s home with a rifle.
Quite right you are. So I did.
Don’t forget the Falklands.
100% is a percentage I’d okay with.
I think the point you’re missing is that without the monetary incentive that arises under capitalism, there would be very little drive for anyone to build these wasteful AI systems. It’s difficult to imagine a group of people voluntarily amassing and then using the resources necessary for “AI” absent the desire to cash in on their investment. So you’re correct that an alternative economic system won’t “magically” make LLMs go away. I think it unlikely, however, that such wasteful nonsense would be used on any meaningful scale absent the perverse incentives of capitalism.
Friendly reminder to everyone: What is pictured in this image is not a molotov, but a self-immolation device that is likely to explode in the hand.
A molotov, on the other hand, consists of a sealed bottle of fuel with a flaming cloth wrapped around it, which prevents ignition of its contents prior to impact.
I don’t think he knows about second hand, Pippin.
Hard to feel sorry for them, tbh. If you can’t tell something’s up when they slice the pizza into 19 slices, you’re kinda cooked.
The metadata is really important especially if you or anyone you talk to ends up being targeted. 95% of intelligence work is mapping out adversaries’ communications networks…if you have that, you don’t need to decrypt the contents because you already know who is talking to who. The federation of metadata alone is reason to avoid matrix for anything important.
I keep meaning to check those out. 10/10 recommend the Sapling Cage though. Her ‘How to Survive the Dino Wars’ series has been helping to keep me sane the last few months.
She sure is! Have you read the Sapling Cage? I just finished it a week ago. Incredible.
There are dozens of us!
I think email gets a bad rap for difficulty of hosting. So long as you get your DMARC, DKIM, RDNS, SPF, etc right, it’s reasonably forgiving. Need to take server down for maintenance? No worries- any mail that couldn’t be delivered will be resent in a few minutes/hours/days.
Harder than hosting a simple website? Yes. Rocket surgery? No.
Pretty close.
