Ironically, my mom’s husband is from Odessa, Ukraine, yet he still sides with Russia. They’re small business owners and would likely profit from AFDs tax reforms. Their clients are also mostly “Russland-deutsche” and apparently most of them are also AFD voters. No wonder they were influenced towards this direction. Hard to tell if they have spoken to Ukrainian refugees, doesn’t seem too unlikely given their clientele.

I think your tip with money is right on the nose. I would also describe my family as opportunistic, now that you mention it, it sounds like a fairly accurate description.

They don’t seem fearful at all to me. My father for one thing believes Russia is the land of the free, where the government protects its citizens from evil NATO. I asked him what he thought about all those opposition journalists who disappeared or got jailed, or what about the laws forbidding to criticize the government on social media. His response was “nobody got jailed! It’s all fake news! My colleague criticizes Putin all the time and nothing happened to him! It’s those foreign agents and business crooks who got jailed, and rightfully so!”

It’s very frustrating, I feel you bro.

Do you happen to have any resources on how to counter pro afd/ pro Putin arguments? I remember seeing a YouTube channel debunking Putins propaganda in Russian, but I don’t know what they were called.

It’s a reference to an infamous 4 panel comic strip called “loss”. It’s one of them ancient memes from 2008. If I remember correctly, the story of the comic is that the dude rushes in to the hospital to find his pregnant wife had just lost their baby or something. If you dumb it down enough and reduce the characters to lines, you end up with

    I II

    II I–

  • I’m wondering how people take showers shorter than 20 minutes. My normal shower routine takes 30-40 minutes, even longer if I need to shave intimate parts. if I’m in a real hurry and skip shaving altogether I might make it in 20 minutes. I have long hair, so I need to apply shampoo, rinse, apply some more shampoo, rinse, apply conditioner, while it soaks I wash my face with gentle face wash, soap up my body, shave, then rinse… It’s a long process.

  • I mean, I don’t know. I don’t have any positive memories or associations with commie blocks. We used to live in a commie block when I was little, before our family moved to Germany. I remember my parents telling me how everyone had to wait in line for 20 years to get an apartment. How difficult it was if you wanted to move out to a different part of the city, yet alone to a completely different city.

I remember everyone I knew sharing a small apartment for multiple generations - my grandparents used to share a two bedroom apartment with their parents, siblings, and the siblings spouses. My grandparents eventually got their own apartment when my mom was little, and by the time I came into this world 5 people were living in those same two rooms - my grandma, my parents, my brother and I. And everyone I knew was living in similar conditions. Only after moving to the west did I get my own room.

Here, I moved out of my parent’s apartment and I am now living on my own with my boyfriend. Sure, rent is expensive, but we can manage. Back then, there was no ‘moving out’, and as far as I know, there still isn’t. There is only moving to your in-laws apartment, or your spouse moves in with you. Can’t imagine sharing my space with my parents or inlaws, it would drive me crazy.

I remember leaving the house was extremely dangerous, so we mostly stayed inside - I was born in the 90’s. I remember the smell of toxic car gases as soon as we left the house. I don’t know how you can romanticize commie blocks.
