7·23 hours agoThere is some suggestion that Trump may declare martial law on April 20th, which is when Hegseth and Noem’s advisory committee is due to recommend to Trump whether he should invoke the Insurrection Act. Coincidentally, perhaps, it is also Adolf Hitler’s birthday (perhaps one reason for Elon Musk’s fondness for 420 references).
21·23 hours agoThat video was perfect. And yes, conservatives and liberals alike tend to disregard the left, but they’ve lived under decades of propaganda and an electoral system specifically intended to entrench power within a very narrow political range.

The USA is going down a route similar to Germany in the 1930s. Would it be appropriate to preach what you just said to Jews and LGBTQ+ people trying to leave Nazi Germany?
It’s not ridiculous.
I don’t think Canadians are generally hostile to Americans unless they prove themselves to be asshole Americans. Lots of Canadians have American friends and would regularly travel over the border until a couple of months ago. And I think most Canadians can see what’s going on in the USA and understand that some people may need to flee.
However, immigration to Canada isn’t automatically allowed so it’s worth doing a bit of research and planning. Here are some government web pages that may help:

29·2 days agoIt’s worth reading the whole article, because it makes pretty clear that it was Israeli forces that did this, that they initially struck the ambulances and then proceeded to execute the people in them, and that there were other slaughters of civilians involved in the same action.
Israel is run by fascists. Most Jews are not fascists. But these fascists would love for you to conflate them with “Jews” in general so they can accuse you of antisemitism. Don’t fall for it.
Canada needs to do what the USA should have done: use the election to keep the fascists out for now, while continuing to organize a real socialist and environmentalist movement from the ground up. You can’t fix the situation wholly within FPTP elections, but you can use them to avoid the worst possible damage while you work on solutions.
“Woke” in university research, as conservatives use the term, means a good chunk of all science, most social science, and pretty much all of the arts and humanities. “Woke” in public services means anything that does not make the lives of the poor, LGBTQ+ people, immigrants, non-white people, everyone except wealthy cishet white men, more miserable.
Do we want Canada to capitalize on the opportunity of attracting the USA’s smartest scientists and academics, looking forward, supporting its people, defending its independent existence and pursuing what makes life better for everyone, or do we want to send Canada down the same drain of ignorance, unemployment, superstition, disease, regressive thinking and hatred the USA is plunging down, while inviting the USA and Russia to attack us? That’s what is at stake in this election.
A healthy society invests in science, arts and the humanities, to better understand the world and be prepared for the future. It invests in public services because it understands that the function of government is to improve the lives of all the people, and that short-term savings are long-term losses. An unhealthy society cuts all of these because in its ignorance and short-sightedness it can’t see the use of them, and then it wonders why it isn’t doing well and starts looking for scapegoats. Which one do we want to be?

Ah, of course, it’s not real antisemitism: it’s the kind where you say mass murder and genocide are just as bad when perpetrated by Israeli Jews as they are when carried out by anyone else. And this seems to be part of a worldwide trend that goes along with the lurch toward fascism, for governments to decide they can kick out and disown their own citizens because of their inconvenient political views.
