  • I don’t disagree that this kind of language is unhelpful. The quickest way to turn someone off is to attack them. However, this isn’t a response to conditions. Because if it were the people voting for Trump should realize he is not now nor ever going to help them economically. Just today he said he doesn’t care if car prices go up. He doesn’t buy cars. He has no clue what ordinary financial hardships people face. Hell he thought you had to show ID to buy groceries. What Trumps popularity is is a tribal reaction. Trump has turned it into an us vs. them and the right is eating it up. They want to believe the ills they feel are someone else’s fault. Whether it’s trans, brown, or black people. It’s not a white Cristian’s fault. When in reality it really is someone else’s fault, just not the someone else they are being to lied to about. As soon as the majority of people realize this is all about class, rich vs. poor (well at least not rich), greedy billionaires vs every one else, that’s when the shit is going to hit the fan. Of course since the rich own all of the media, they may never realize.

I gotta comment on the mid 70s thing and how great it is to hear that. I have also been into computers since the late 70s (well and early 80s) although I imagine I got started a little younger than you … like I was 8 and writing basic/ assembly on my various machines back in the day (TRS-80 Model III, Tandy CoCo 2, Coleco Adam, C64). So I’m only mid 50s and I thought I was the old guy around here :) But damn if you don’t give me hope that I can stay like this for many years to come.

I’m not sure “Reddit levels of activity” is necessarily a good thing :)

But yeah that takes some getting used to for sure. I would think this is one of the more popular communities here for kinda obvious reasons given the nature of Lemmy. I’ve only been here since the first great migration but I’ve already seen Lemmy in general grow tremendously.

  • Yeah anything ephemeral is fine like chats and what not. But this idea of using it as support platform is just dumb. You end up with people asking the same question over and over and it either doesn’t get answered because no one is around to answer it or likely because they’re annoyed at the same questions over and over. There is no organization and no institutional knowledge. It’s like it ends up being set up by people who think it’s what the cool kids want. And these giant communities just exacerbate this issue. Everything ends up being noise. It’s the reason I usually ended up turning off the world or general channels in WoW. It just ended up being annoying and distracting.

When I’m trying resolve a situation that I need some sort of support I wanna be able to search if others have had the same issue and see discussion around that topic. I don’t need synchronous communication for that. I don’t care if it was 3 months ago someone had the problem if they figured out how to fix it. The way to do that is forums, Reddit (well before the enshittification), or even Lemmy.
