If you do make one be very careful. A lot of countries have laws about what people under 18 can do online. Running afoul of those laws could get someone in a lot of trouble. Besides lying about your age and making an account anyway is an internet rite of passage.

beliquititious@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is one moral you have that most people don't agree with?2·21 days agoYou knowing nothing about fishing is a perfect example. Would it be a good idea for you to set policy about fishing? No, there is too much nuance and complexity in managing existing sea life. Some fishing is good for a healthy ecosystem, too much fishing is bad. To manage the shared resource of the sea requires the input of fishing folks, conservationists, environmentalists, and anyone else with an interest. No one group or even small coalition should be allowed to control any aspect of commercial fishing. It must be decided collectively or not at all.
By force I mean anything that would compel action from someone with a threat of consequences. Changing the incentives is not force because you’re not imposing consequences, just making the prospect less appealing.
beliquititious@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is one moral you have that most people don't agree with?30·21 days agoThere is virtue in minding your own business. If it doesn’t effect you directly you don’t need an opinion on it and you certainly shouldn’t share it or expect anyone who is effected to care what you think. You’re a bad person if you support people who want to use force to control how other people live their lives. You’re evil if you would use force to control how someone else lives their life.

If you find a bigot willing to have a good faith debate, maybe, but there is no reasoning with cult members. They have to want to change.

The community is way friendlier and there are 9000% fewer bots. Also I frequently deleted my reddit accounts for mental health reasons and on occasion in protest and rebuilding a reddit account to the point you can comment in most subs is so annoying. In like a year of using Lemmy on and off I’ve had more real conversations with real people than I did in thriteen years as a redditor.

People who no longer distinguish White House 4Chan2·24 days ago“I realized that the roots of this act were not in any time-honored American myth but right beneath my feet in a new kind of society that is only beginning to take shape. To see the Hell’s Angels as caretakers of the old “individualist” tradition “that made this country great” is only a painless way to get around seeing them for what they really are — not some romantic leftover, but the first wave of a future that nothing in our history has prepared us to cope with. The Angels are prototypes. Their lack of education has not only rendered them completely useless in a highly technical economy, but it has also given them the leisure to cultivate a powerful resentment… and to translate it into a destructive cult…” - Hunter S. Thompson, Hell’s Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga (1967)
That’s an excellent reason to try and live in the moment and enjoy what you have while you have it.
Not so much forgetting as ignoring and downplaying for my own mental health.

Hopefully they also don’t leave gigantic weapons that can destroy the country all over the legal tapestry and use the honor system to control their usage.
Take heart, in 10 years the worst of the boomers in power today will be dead. In 20 years there will be almost no boomers left. Hopefully there will be enough of a country left to fix once they’re all dead.

The best thing you can do to hold reddit to account would be to become an active lemmy user. You could make a reddit sucks sublemmy and moderate that if you are angry enough to take action.

What happened?3·26 days agoThis was years ago, but I was driving around listening to music with my windows down and a couple guys in a van pulled up next to me and asked if I wanted a deal on stereo equipment. Being the naive idiot I was I followed them into a parking lot.
They claimed to be home stereo installers and had accidentally received two premium stereos for a customer order instead of one. They wanted to get rid of the second one for beer money and asked for like $200. They had a magazine that showed the stereo was worth several thousand and I thought I might make a quick buck by reselling it to a pawn shop or online.
I didn’t have $200 but I had overdraft protection so I thought I would pull that money out anyway and pay it back once I had sold the stereo. The guy at the pawnshop was the one who told me I got scammed and I have never felt more embarrassed.

beliquititious@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•In your opinion, when does something become unforgivable?10·27 days agoThe only time something would become unforgivable is if it were done with intentional malice or becomes a pattern of behavior. I’m willing to forgive quiet a bit, if the harm an action caused was not the intent. When it becomes the intent, such as physical violence or repeated trauma, that’s where I take a hard line and will not forgive. For less spectacular transgressions, repeat events are where things become unforgivable. I am willing to give grace on that more because I’m bad about not communicating to others how their actions hurt me, but if we’ve talked about how their behavior is a problem and they keep doing it? No sorry, we’re done.
beliquititious@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Ex-conspiracists, what made you stop believing conspiracy theorie(s) you believed?41·27 days agoFor me it was a call on Coast To Coast AM. I used to be suuuuuuper into all that shit. I was a regular listener to C2C and believed 70% of the crap they shoveled. The 30% I didn’t believe (ghosts and the supernatural) were because I had personally tried astral projecting, recording evps, ghost hunting, etc. and none of it worked for me.
Anyway the call was in the early 2000’s and Art Bell was hosting. The caller claimed to be a scientist working for a secret government lab working on portal tech and had accidentally opened a doorway to another where filled with hostile beings who took control of the facility. When the caller identified themselves as Dr. Gordon Freeman I realized anyone could just say any bullshit and these idiots would believe it.
It took like 10 years to fully flush conspiracy thinking out of my brain and I overcorrected hard by becoming one of those obnoxious skeptics for a while.
Though given the times we live in today I’ve seen a few theories online that have an uncomfortable amount of truth to them and have to admit I have been tempted.
beliquititious@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto Reddit@lemmy.world•Nobody is really talking about Reddit dropping value since they banned Luigi posts and sided with Musk to remove communities11·1 month agoMaybe this is a dumb question, but how does the day to day health of the reddit community affect the stock price? Wouldn’t a simpler explanation be that reddit stock is in decline like most other stocks right now because of the overall market uncertainty?

A measure on the March 29 ballot would enable lawmakers to move more teenagers into the adult criminal system.13·1 month ago… Republican lawmaker Tony Bacala told his colleagues, “Some of these kids are already lost when they’re two years old.”
How ghoulish and completely divorced from reality must one be to look at a two year old as a criminal?
In my 20’s I had three dreams. The first I was at my parents house preparing for a zombie invasion. I knew we would be fine if I found “it” (no idea what it was) but was unable to in the dream. The second dream I was at the office trying to find “it” again and knew I only had three chances. The third dream I was in the desert at the mouth of a skull shaped cave. I had a shovel and knew it was my last chance to find “it”. I failed and awoke knowing I had lost something important but undefinable. The dreams were all about a month apart and so vivid they felt real.
Another interesting note on my dreams is almost all of the really intensely real dreams I’ve been able to recall take place in different parts of the same “world”. Sometimes in the dream I can recall other dreams and where they are in relation to the current dream, most often I make the connection after waking.
