Immediately thought of this:
“I think something’s wrong with me. I make friends, then suddenly I can’t bear to be with any of them. Seems like that other me, the cheerful and honest one, went away somewhere.”

I am not a number.

If you think twoxchromosomes is bad because women there had the nerve to talk about their bad experiences, then actual feminist subs must’ve terrified you.
Based on what I’ve learnt, what’s holding Lemmy back is that a large amount of users are fucking man babies that brigade any women-oriented communities and drive women in general away from this place, while admins just sit back and allow them to. The Lemmy mouse needs a fedora.
50 years from now, considering that the USA elections changed nothing for Palestine either way (or maybe even made things worse for them under Trump now), the history books won’t be talking about these ‘brave’ heroes that sat out the vote for the sake of Palestine. They’ll be talking about all of the apathetic, zero empathy, selfish children who were happy to sit back and watch LGBTQ+ people and other minorities get their rights and dignity stripped from them because it didn’t affect them personally.
LineageOS 20 on the Nokia 4.2. The only option for this phone besides LineageOS 19 and it’s one of these cases where the dev just stopped updating anything and deleted their XDA profile. Might go back to vanilla but the problem is that’s a downgrade in Android version too.
This whole phone is a regret. My previous phone had just died unexpectedly and it was a spur of the moment purchase with a low budget, based on nostalgia for a ‘Nokia’ that doesn’t actually exist anymore. Should’ve just gone for a cheap Samsung and I probably would’ve at least had more choice in custom firmwares.
All depends on which app / UI you’re using I guess but it should look pretty much like Reddit almost everywhere. The only difference here is that there’s no grand total at the top of your profile like a high score. But when I was signed up on world, in the app I’m using you could see separate up and down vote counts for everything.
They’re really not meaningless though. For one thing, they allow moderators and admins to more easily detect trolls and bad faith actors. And on platforms or with add-ons that allow better tracking of vote history, it allows the user to more efficiently moderate their own experience, should they so choose.
Also, I think you’ve got to be kind of an asshole to not recognise that a little bit of validation from communities that you participate in is a nice thing to have and that downvotes can hurt to an extent, even if it’s not the same as getting physically slapped. And to be clear, I’m not pointing at you or anyone, I’m just riffing here. I haven’t even seen downvotes for a while now.
So yeah, I’d say they’re meaningless in a video game sense. You’re not going to win any prizes with them. But there’s a reason they exist, plus no one is immune to the effects of positive or negative reinforcement.
That escalated quickly.
Going to be a bit negative but this is something that’s kinda annoyed me about Android in the last few years. BREAKING: new shortcut available! And then there’s the articles and breaking news for them doing shit like changing the design of the clock slightly every now and then.
What annoys me about all of this is that the very first Android phone that I had, the S4 Mini, that started out on Android 4.3, had custom firmwares around that allowed you to customise every shortcut with anything and choose from multiple styles of clock. Amongst other things.
Which tells me that the folks working on Android could easily make things more customisable but they choose not to so that we can get these articles going on about how awesome a new shortcut is and they get to look like they’re always working on these new ‘innovations’.
They’re running out of ways to add extra cameras, so now they’re acting like adding a new shortcut to a button that should’ve been more configurable in the first place is some sort of technological breakthrough.
For me personally, it’s something that I’m always activating in my pocket and have disabled now.
The way I see it, the slippery slope that we’re currently on is tolerating nazis and bigots.
It’s all good. Thank you for taking the time out to try and help out here. And for being involved in building cool platforms for people to get together. You guys behind the scenes here in this indie web (or whatever you may call it) are heroes for giving us alternatives to turn to for our Sonic the Hedgehog shitposts and whatnot. Now more than ever.
I’ll report back if there’s any difference when I get things sorted on my phone. Which is going to be a little bit of a job, so I’m not going to get it done now at 23:04. But it needs to be done.
Update: not entirely sure what else to try but one thing I’ve tried now is disabling the global dark theme in my settings as well as Firefox (aargh my eyes). This seems to make no difference either. I even switched to the “Trans Pride” theme and it remains the same. The only settings that I’ve modified in accessibility is to make text size smaller.
If you have any suggestions of what to try, I’d be happy to. Otherwise I’ve been needing an excuse to start over on this device. So a reflash might be in order.
Haha well this is odd. Definitely wasn’t on the high contrast theme.
And after switching to the Card Shadow theme, the entire thing just stayed the same with the very dark background and white boxes.
Using cropped images to reduce the size of my post but basically it looks the same as the first screenshot in my previous post, regardless of the theme chosen and saved. Including the home page outside of settings.
I definitely don’t have any accessibility settings enabled and haven’t encountered this on other websites (yet), although my usage of Firefox is pretty low these days because it’s fairly heavy duty for my phone. I’ll play around with my settings and try a few things though.
Firstly the obligatory disclaimer that I’m not American, just someone that has been watching this unfold on the same world wide web that we all use.
Maybe I’m too radical but I would say fully. Whether they want a white christian nationalist country or just wanted cheaper eggs. Because that first thing was never a hidden objective, it was clear from the start. We had people who find secret illuminati pizza messages on bathroom walls take one look at Project 2025, an actual real conspiracy and go “doesn’t look like anything to me”.
So whether they’re true right wingers, conspiracy theorists, or people that closed their eyes and ears and hearts while convincing themselves that this was all about cheaper groceries; I’d say they’re all equally to blame.
We don’t need to reach 1M MAU, but having 100k would already be a nice improvement
Definitely agreed with this. And less always (understandably) angry political posters, more escapists that want to chat about movies, games etc. It becomes like that snake eating itself because people that want a break from real life come here and see nothing but the same 24 news cycle as everywhere else. And then, speaking for myself, searching up certain niche communities and finding them either non-existent or with 3 posts from 1 and a half years ago.
I’ve been thinking of porting a couple of my old review posts over here from my banned but not yet closed Reddit account. Just so that, for example, the next time someone visits the Ghibli community there’ll be 4 posts instead of 3.
And the Sonic communities are pretty disappointing too, considering I’m always seeing it mentioned in the wild these days. Makes me think (or hope) that there’s a lot of people like me wishing there was more activity in these areas.
Reddit is sadly still unbeaten in searching up a TV show that you enjoy and finding an entire community built around it. And those communities never took a lot of members. So it shouldn’t be impossible here.
So glad that free speech has been restored.
I’m going to just try again here. I’ve woken up ill today, in a bit of a brainfog and right now just doing this from the Lemmy app that I use is the easiest. I’m going to get all of the text out of the way at the top of this post and put the screenshots at the bottom. First screenshot is the issue I’m facing when I first load the page. Second screenshot is what it looks like after multitasking for a bit and returning to Firefox (at which point the page reloads, reloading manually without the multitasking didn’t fix it however, so I’m assuming this a memory management thing?).
I feel like I should also note that my phone isn’t great at all. And I’m running a custom firmware. So if this is an odd issue that no one else has ever encountered, I’m prepared to re-flash the vanilla firmware to my phone and try again.
I also feel like I should just alert you that in your welcome email, you mention to reply to the email with any issues. However, the email is a ‘noreply’ that returns “address not found”. I’m guessing that the wording in the welcome email is from an earlier time and hasn’t been changed yet.
I dunno but I always get the impression that these fucking people that are too cool for school and need to loudly tell everyone how little they care about downvotes every chance they get, are probably also the people that go around using downvotes in bad faith and making the platform a little less welcoming for everyone.
My advice would probably be to just stay away from instances that are populated with the kind of people that use downvotes as a ‘disagree’ button or panic button to make themselves feel better when reading something they don’t understand. Those were always the worst people on Reddit that dragged the experience down for everyone. And it sucks that they’re all here too. And in a smaller pond, they’re going to be making a bigger splash.
I’d find a nice instance and / or communities to spend 90% of my time in and only actually go to places like Ask Lemmy in world when you actually feel like dealing with smart alecs and neckbeards.
Edit: and downvoting people for talking about downvotes isn’t actually funny, it’s just proof that you use downvotes for the wrong reasons. For the meme and ‘disagree’ button.
Just went there. Top post is politics, next post is about a touchy feely doctor, there’s a few about body image, more politics, a reminder to not use period tracker apps because the USA government is literally taking women’s rights over their own bodies away, dating advice, more politics.
Looks to me like a women-oriented subreddit for discussing women’s issues, just like it always has. Could you point out some of these ‘femcels’ there to me? Should they be praising the Trump administration, swooning over pervert doctors and sharing Andrew Tate screenshots instead?
Maybe a lot are a bit angry there but I think they’ve got every fucking right to be angry right now. Don’t you?
