I don’t think the downvotes are because you’re misgendering them. It’s just baffling why you’ve gendered them at all. It’s unfunny and out of place.

I’ve shot both, bows as a complete amateur and relatively competent with a rifle. There is no question that a modern gun is way easier to pick up as an amateur and hit what you want to hit and I cannot possibly believe there are anything other than extremely niche uses where a bow is superior.

I use firstname@lastname.tld for personal email. Anything @lastname.tld forwards to my main email so for the rare occasion I need to access Facebook my account is facebook@lastname.tld and so on for any other untrustworthy sites.
I can easily block emails from a leak or just if unsubscribing is made difficult.
It’s really common to get weird dreams when quitting smoking. Especially if you’re using nicotine replacement and extra especially if you’re using a patch and not taking it off before bed.
Changes in the amount of nicotine in your blood disrupts REM, it’s more fragmented and this seems to have the effect of more intense dreams.

Joshi@aussie.zoneto Out of the loop@lemmy.world•What is going on with Wikipedia and now a bunch of people seem to hate it? What did they do to piss people off? Did they change something?302·2 months agoHate for Wikipedia comes from a few places.
The first and most important is that most people who have tried to edit Wikipedia have their first edit reverted, usually with good reason, because they don’t understand the procedures and policies. Unfortunately these procedures and policies are what maintains high quality.
Related is news articles and blogs about edit wars and less frequently that an article or group of articles is genuinely captured by one volunteer who will protect their own little fiefdoms and not allow anyone else to edit them. This happens but it’s pretty uncommon and the structure of Wikipedia means that it only really stands on fairly obscure articles.
It’s also true that Wikipedia does have an inherent western liberal bias. It’s subtle but it is there and results from the fact that for the majority of Wikipedia editors western liberalism is the water they swim in. Any claim that is counter to this ideology needs to be cited up the wazoo whereas claims that are confidant with it will often slide without citation. Those with a strong attachment to an alternative ideology often find it infuriating.
Finally there are individuals who would rather have the arbiter of truth be the powerful rather than a relatively democratic institution.
All that said Wikipedia is a remarkable achievement and an invaluable part of the internet.
Joshi@aussie.zoneto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Are there specific terms for the different types of monetary inflation?1·3 months agoI understand why you are putting them together but I think only the CPI measures inflation, there are other indexes also but inflation has to do with the value of money decreasing over time.
The supply of money is inextricably linked to inflation but an increasing money supply is not inflation, under certain circumstances you could have no, or negative inflation, with increasing money supply. If you had high demand for currency due to large volumes of exports for example.
In short the terms you want are inflation and money supply.
Disclaimer: I dropped out of an undergraduate economics degree about 2/3 through around 15 years ago. I believe this is correct but please anyone correct me if not.
Joshi@aussie.zoneto Books@lemmy.world•What book(s) are you currently reading or listening? January 211·3 months agoI adored the Mars trilogy as a teenager, it’s hard for me to be objective about it as it’s such a comfort read.
I know a lot of people feel the series loses steam part way through Green Mars, and I can see why, but I love all three books unconditionally 🥹
Joshi@aussie.zoneto Books@lemmy.world•What book(s) are you currently reading or listening? January 211·3 months agoI’m just about done with Shaman by Kim Stanley Robinson, I’ve read most of his work and this might be his strongest work. It’s clear from the Mars and science in the capitol trilogies that the man is obsessed with stone age culture so it’s an obvious choice of setting for him and unlike much of the rest of his work it’s a simple and self contained story.
I’m also a few chapters into Julia by Sandra Newman, a retelling of 1984 from Julia’s pov. Very evocative and well written so far, looking forward to the rest of the book.

Joshi@aussie.zoneto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is there any real physical proof that Jesus christ ever existed?1·10 months agoI’ll give you the benefit of the doubt here but both Suetonius and Pliny are talking about Christians in the 2nd century, Tacitus speaks about Christ only in the context of Nero blaming Christians for the great fire. These are literary evidence for the existence of Christians in the second century but are not direct literary evidence of the existence of Christ as an individual which was the question I was addressing.
I’d be delighted to be shown to be wrong but I believe my original post stands.
Joshi@aussie.zoneto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is there any real physical proof that Jesus christ ever existed?532·10 months agoI’m by no means an expert but I was briefly obsessed with comparative religion over a decade ago and I don’t think anyone has given a great answer, I believe my answer is correct but I don’t have time for research beyond checking a couple of details.
As a few people have mentioned there is little physical evidence for even the most notable individuals from that time period and it’s not reasonable to expect any for Jesus.
In terms of literary evidence there is exactly 1 historian who is roughly contemporary and mentions Jesus. Antiquities of the Jews by Josephus mentions him twice, once briefly telling the story of his crucifixion and resurrection. The second is a mention in passing when discussing the brother of Jesus delivering criminals to be stoned.
I think it is reasonable to conclude that a Jewish spiritual leader with a name something like Jesus Christ probably existed and that not long after his death miracles are being attributed to him.
It is also worth noting the historical context of the recent emergence of Rabbinical Judaism and the overabundance of other leaders who were claimed to be Messiahs, many of whom we also know about primarily(actually I think only) from Josephus.
This is the correct answer. At some point paediatricians and other folks interested in child development standardised the meaning of infant as above but unless you’re a paediatrician they are completely interchangeable.

If you want things like e-commerce or online booking you might want something else although linking to another service from a Squarespace site could work.
I’m currently shifting to self hosting and having troubles with Hover, but for an easy to use service that doesn’t require any technical knowledge it works fine. They also offer email@yourdomain.com which I use as my main personal email with no worries.
Please don’t just have a Facebook page, it becomes a real pain for non-facebook users, especially on mobile, and it makes you look like a complete amateur.
Joshi@aussie.zoneto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•If you had to give one piece of advice that is pretty much universally applicable, what would it be?1·11 months agoI think we mostly agree.
For context I’m a doctor who is constantly pushing back against profit driven motives.
Being time constrained is an effect of capitalism but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t real work to be done.
People can and should take time out to express their personalities, hopes and frustrations and bond and be together in the workplace. That said, personal communication in the workplace and professional communication are different beasts.
Not thinking about what you’re trying to say or what information you need leads to rambling tirades in person and paragraphs that could’ve been sentences in emails, this is not being a machine, it is wasting my time and the time of my patients(whose rambling tirades it is my pleasure to listen to😉)
Joshi@aussie.zoneto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•If you had to give one piece of advice that is pretty much universally applicable, what would it be?6·11 months agoReminder me of this
“What to do if you find yourself stuck with no hope of rescue: Consider yourself lucky that life has been good to you so far. Alternatively, if life hasn’t been good to you so far - which, given your present circumstances, seems more likely - consider yourself lucky that it won’t be troubling you much longer.” Douglas Adams
Joshi@aussie.zoneto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•If you had to give one piece of advice that is pretty much universally applicable, what would it be?1·11 months agoExcellent, I’m going to add to this, even if the the answer justifies/requires an explanation put the answer first ie “Yes, long explanation” is vastly superior to “Long explanation, so yes”
That is just beautiful 😍
