Gritonia is even more infuriating in anime form than in the manga. Hearing them just brings another dimension of disgust.
I wasn’t expecting to like this, but it ended up being pretty charming. Obviously the first episode’s plot was very expected (with a title like that, it’s hard to pull too many surprises right off the bat), though I was pleasantly surprised that the sisters are on good terms, even though they’re clearly scapegoat and golden child and that can breed resentment on both sides. I think there’s a lot of promise here, be it as shoujo slop or something of more complex character - and to be clear, either is fine with me as long as it’s fun, lol. I give the premiere a 4/5.
First, a meta-comment - Each new season, there are always some hiccups in the accuracy of the AniList api that this bot uses for making posts. There is an edge case that can happen where an episode is completely missed by the bot and that happened for this show (don’t really want to dive into details, I am on vacation). In any case, it looks like it is fixed for episode 2+.
Alright, I am a fan of this manga and I am really happy with the adaptation so far. It’s pretty clear that they are doing what they can with a really limited budget, but I like the look they have going. The backgrounds having that vignetted, watercolor look to them really works with this series. It also saves their animation effort for the important characters, and I think it has worked so far.
The title of this series is basically a summary of the first episode, so I don’t think anybody should be surprised by the story so far. I am really looking forward to seeing this one as it goes. This series is a bit of a slow burn, but I think the final third of this season should be pretty great (assuming they hit the climax I think they will). So, people that are able to stick with it should get rewarded (hopefully, don’t drop the ball please).
I am on vacation right now, so I am not going to go through the effort of making a screenshot, but I was laughing out loud when they had Mia and Philia back to back comparing their “qualities” as Saints as the camera slowly panned up their chests. The prince and basically everybody in Girtonia is so cartoonishly evil, and the anime leaned into that pretty well.
So I should stick with it? I found the first episode extremely formulaic. I watched it with my daughter, and we both could predict every single story beat way in advance. The only thing that was surprising was that the sister didn’t seem like the evil stepsister trope from Cinderella.
If this was just the basic setup and is out of the way now after this episode, I’ll continue watching, but if this continues in this way, I’d rather drop it.
Yeah, I agree with @Phelpssan@lemmy.world. The next chunk of story is really slow and predictable followed by a dramatic shift in tone leading up to the finale (I think) that is great. I think both of your story senses are well-honed because Mia is by far the most interesting character in this story, but she won’t show up too much until later.
Honestly though, there are probably better shows out there in the pantheon of anime that you could spend your time on. I don’t know how this show will turn out, but there are obvious limitations with the production. So, we can just wait and see how the quality does or doesn’t hold up as the season goes.
I’ve read the manga adaptation.
The first arc is extremely formulaic and kinda boring, but the second arc is awesome. At the current pacing both should be covered with a 12 episode season.
Second arc spoilers
It focuses on Mia as she tries to get revenge on the people who wronged her sister while also trying to avoid the kingdom being destroyed due to a monster invasion.
I like it so far as well.
Just hope that it’s not caricatural all the way through.
