Trees are struggling to sequester heat-trapping carbon dioxide (CO2) in warmer, drier climates, meaning that they may no longer serve as a solution for offsetting humanity’s carbon footprint as the planet continues to warm, according to a new study led by Penn State researchers.
This is (another) major tipping point. The battle’s been lost without a battle.
Some will yet live if we get our shit together. But it might be time to redact some oil execs and force less long-distance trade.
Trees are part of the short carbon cycle and can never be used to offset carbon released from the long carbon cycle. Having more trees is always a good thing, but it was never and will never be a solution to climate change.
